Health Literacy Basics

What do we know about health literacy?

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) share information on health literacy basics in this resource including definitions, description of the importance of health literacy, and what can be done to improve health literacy. In addition, the CDC provides other links that may be useful in understanding the basics of health literacy, if you prefer other modes of learning such as videos and/or podcasts.

In short, health literacy is the “ability to find, understand, and use information and services to inform health-related decisions and actions”. It is important for “attaining the highest level of health for all people”. We can begin to aid in achieving health literacy by “using plain language, using your audience’s preferred language and communication channels, and using culturally and linguistically appropriate language.”
